Celebrating 100 Years

Ngaire Darby

Ngaire’s 100th birthday brought about reminisces of her childhood, her years as a younger woman and her much loved family.

The NZ Listener, a weekly magazine established by the BBC in January 1939 also remembered Ngaire as the young 14-year-old who fronted the cover of their first ever edition. Already a storyteller on radio 2YA children’s show she was chosen for an international broadcast of the Empire Day greeting, now known as Commonwealth Day, to King George VI.  A smiling Ngaire on the studio microphone is the photo that appeared on that edition 85 years ago.

Ngaire lives independently in the Taradale Masonic Village, and when asked what her secret to long life is, she tells us “It’s just the way I am, I’m so lucky”.
